Columbia University’s Manhattanville Campus Expansion
Challenges Solved
Columbia University’s 17-acre Manhattanville development west of Broadway at 125th Street is a state-of-the-art campus with multi-level basements for education space. Significant challenges included construction of deep basements extending 60 feet below grade in close proximity to sensitive structures such as the NYCT IRT Viaduct, the Riverside Drive Viaduct, and the landmark Studebaker Building. MRCE developed designs for foundations, excavation support and groundwater control that worked within the complex geology of the site including interlayered sand and clay soil deposits and deep erratic weathered rock and bedrock.
