Hospital for Special Surgery
Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is internationally recognized as one of the leading hospitals specializing in orthopedic surgery and rheumatologic care. Situated on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, HSS is located along FDR Drive, between East 70th and 71st Streets. Over the years, the hospital has undertaken several projects, including the expansion of FDR Drive, the Anna Maria and Stephen Keller Tower, a new building on 74th Street, multiple pedestrian bridges, the Ambulatory Surgery Center, and, most recently, the expansion of the Kellen Tower.
MRCE has provided geotechnical services for HSS projects for decades, from the major 1986 expansion to the present. Services have included comprehensive subsurface investigations; the preparation of geotechnical reports with foundation and construction recommendations for this challenging site, with steeply sloping bedrock along the East River; the design of complex excavation support systems for multi-cellar levels below grade; and strategies to avoid additional load on the existing bulkhead. Additionally, MRCE has designed both shallow and deep foundations to support the hospital's buildings, conducted special inspections for excavation support and foundation work, and provided construction administration services.
