NYSDOT Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Contract 1
The Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Contract 1 reduced congestion and enhanced connections at the interchange of the Bruckner Expressway (I-278), Sheridan Boulevard, and Edgewater Road. The Hunts Point Peninsula and surrounding areas are home to the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, the largest food distribution facility in the nation, along with various industrial, commercial, and residential properties.
Logistical challenges with this project included working near active New York City Transit, Amtrak, and CSX rail lines, as well as coordinating work within the jurisdictions of NYCDOT and the NYC Parks Department. Geotechnical challenges involved constructing over thick, compressible marsh deposits and obstructions in the historic fill.
MRCE served as the Lead Geotechnical Engineer for this Design-Build Project, providing geotechnical and structural design services for new and retrofitted bridge foundations, including drilled and driven piles, retaining walls, embankments, and ground improvements to mitigate settlement. An instrumentation and monitoring plan was also developed to monitor existing and adjacent structures during construction.
Interesting Facts
An interesting fact about the NYSDOT Hunts Point Interstate Access Improvement Project is that it was the largest design–build project ever undertaken by NYSDOT and fundamentally changed how freight moves to and from New York City’s food supply hub.
